Why I Founded IMPOSITION.

Why I Founded IMPOSITION

Most brands don't have a marketing problem. They have a meaning problem. A note from founder Gellan Watt on why positioning is the last durable advantage.

After more than twenty years building agencies, brands and campaigns for some of the world's biggest companies, I started to notice something.

Most brands don't have a marketing problem.

They have a meaning problem.

The market is saturated with communication. Endless messaging. Endless content. Endless noise. Yet very little of it is remembered.

Because memorability is not created through volume.

It is created through clarity.

And AI is accelerating the problem.

What was already a sea of sameness is quickly becoming a sea of mediocrity. More content. More automation. More optimisation. More average. Businesses are producing more than ever while meaning less and less.

The strongest brands in the world understand this instinctively. They do not simply advertise products. They impose meaning. On culture. On memory. On expectation. Over time, that meaning compounds until the brand becomes inevitable.

That idea became the foundation for IMPOSITION.

I'm Gellan Watt. A strategist, creative director, founder and serial entrepreneur who has spent more than two decades helping businesses rethink their positioning, sharpen their identity and find new waves of growth.

Over the years I've worked with brands including Apple, Amazon, Pinterest, BBC, John Lewis, BMW, Pfizer, Porsche and Barbour. I founded my first agency in 2003. It became one of the UK's most awarded and recommended independent agencies, eventually growing into a Top 10 UK Creative Agency and UK Agency of the Year.

Later, I merged the agency and, as Group MD and Chief Creative Officer, helped scale the group to around £60m in revenue before exit.

I understand the realities of growth.

Aligning culture. Integrating businesses. Navigating change. Making difficult decisions. Building momentum. Losing momentum. Repositioning. Reinventing. The pressure of leadership. The weight of responsibility. The pain of change.

I've lived both the creative and commercial sides of business.

Not from the outside looking in.

From inside the pressure.

But I've never just advised businesses from the sidelines.

I've invested in brands. Built businesses. Scaled companies. Put my own money behind ideas and backed conviction with action. I still advise agencies, founders and leadership teams directly while working closely with brands navigating growth, repositioning and transformation.

Over time, I became less interested in campaigns and more interested in the thing underneath them.

Positioning.

Why some brands become culturally magnetic while others disappear into category sameness. Why some businesses compound in value while others endlessly chase attention. Why certain companies feel inevitable.

IMPOSITION™ exists to help brands define the meaning they should own and how that meaning should be expressed consistently across everything they do.

Not another traditional agency. Not a production machine. Not a slide factory.

A positioning studio focused on clarity, distinctiveness and strategic coherence.

We work with founders, leadership teams and organisations that want to become impossible to mistake for anyone else. Businesses that understand distinctiveness is no longer optional. That clarity matters more than ever. That culture moves faster than categories. That positioning is not messaging. It is strategic memory architecture.

The studio is intentionally minimal. No bloated capability decks. No endless case studies. No agency theatre. Just sharp thinking, strong systems and clear positioning designed to compound over time.

Because in a world of infinite content, the brands that win are rarely the loudest.

They are the clearest.

And eventually, the clearest brands become inevitable.
